I have a weird obsession with one-hit wonders. I listen to them all the time. I read up on them. I talk about them. There's a thesis in there somewhere, I'm sure.
I was looking at a Web site of one-hit wonders today (I told you, I think about them a lot) and I inadvertently found the discovery of a lifetime.
For months, I have had this ridiculous song running through my head. I could identify a few words and was quite convinced it was an '80s hair band, but could not find anyone who knew the artist. Hell, I couldn't find anyone who has even heard it. This could be because of my singing.
I've spent months singing this to people in the office, occasionally accompanying it with an interpretive dance.
Blank stares.
But I found it today while looking at this Web site. It is..wait for it..."Bang" by Gorky Park. I looked it up on YouTube and it was confirmed it was the song I was seeking. Thank God, I am not crazy.
And because I know you're curious: See it here
What's more alarming is it's from 1989. By 1989, I was not sitting around listening to hair bands. I was too busy having Morrissey strum my pain with his fingers. So how "Bang" seeped into my consciousness, and seemingly no one else's will remain a mystery.
I was also quite pleased to find the year of my birth is notorious for some fantastic one-hit wonders. Because I am old, the year in question is 1975. One-hit wonders from 1975 include, but are not limited, to:
* "The Hustle" by Van McCoy
* "How Long" by Ace
* "Magic" by Pilot
* "Lovin' You" by Minnie Ripperton
* 'Feelings" by Morris Albert
* "Sky High" by Jigsaw
* "Chevy Van" by Sammy Johns
and "Never Been Any Reason" by Head East, which I've always liked.
Interestingly enough, onehitwondercentral.com lists "Autobahn" by Kraftwerk as a one-hit wonder from 1975.
While I think it's cool that Kraftwerk released a fabulous song in 1975, I'll dispute that they are a one-hit wonder.
Of course, I'm sure there's some hard-core Van McCoy fan out there who would dispute his status, too.
